Steps You Can Expect During A Dental Checkup Procedure

by | Dec 11, 2020

Paying a visit to your dentist is essential, even when you’re not experiencing any oral problems. A dental checkup procedure is one way of maintaining your oral hygiene.

Dental checkup procedure for your oral health

Your oral health needs to be a priority. It can cause you many problems later on, especially when teeth and gum problems go unnoticed. Your dentist’s role is to monitor your oral health during your scheduled visits.

Having a dental checkup procedure allows your dentist to help you prevent issues with your teeth and gums. You can visit your dentist monthly, twice a year or depending on their advice.

Dentists and dental hygienists are experts you can trust in conducting general checkups. Your dentist will assess your overall dental health and hygiene by examining your mouth.

What happens during a visit to your dentist?

Dentists and dental hygienists are the ones who specialize in dental care and dental procedures. You’ll know if you need dental surgery for any tooth decay or gum disease after they examine your mouth.

Dental x-ray

Your dentist may require you to have a dental x-ray, as it can help diagnose oral issues in depth. They can see your teeth and jawbone structures, which helps identify any underlying oral problems.

Your dentist will not require you to have an x-ray every visit, as it can depend on your dental exam results. There are times when a physical inspection of your mouth is enough, especially when you have recently made a dentist visit.

A panoramic dental x-ray shows your entire mouth in a single image, and here are the steps when taking it:

  1. Your dentist places an apron made of lead on your chest.
  2. You bite on a small piece of plastic.
  3. Your dentist places a scanner outside your mouth.
  4. Your dentist takes dental radiography images.

Dental cleaning

A dental cleaning procedure aims to clean your teeth and gums. Failing to visit your dentist at least twice a year can cause plaque buildup.

You will sit on a chair with a light above you, as your dentist does the following:

  1. Use dental tools such as a scaler to remove plaque from your teeth.
  2. Floss your teeth after plaque removal.
  3. Brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush.
  4. Apply fluoride gel on your teeth to avoid tooth decay.

Once you go home after your dental office visit, you still need to observe proper oral hygiene. Schedule a dental checkup procedure with your Vaughan dentist to keep your teeth, gums, and mouth always healthy.
