Sedation and Anesthesia
As dental care professionals, we understand some people have negative associations about visiting the dentist and receiving dental treatments. Our team strives to create a comfortable environment, but we also offer sedation therapy and anesthesia when this is not enough.
Laughing gas is a blend of two gases, oxygen and nitrogen. If your child is worried about dental treatments, he or she may respond more positively with the use of this therapy. It has a calming effect when inhaled and is then easily eliminated from the body afterwards through normal breathing. Nitrous oxide delivers a sweet, pleasant aroma and a general sense of well-being and relaxation. Since it is a safe, mild, and non-addictive sedative, your child will remain conscious during the therapy and even maintain all natural reflexes.
The beneficial effects of nitrous oxide include:
- Reduced anxiety
- Reduced pain
- Altered perception of time (appointments seem shorter)
- Visual fear reduction (nose mask blocks the view of dental instruments and other items that could frighten a child)
The Canadian Dental Association recognizes nitrous oxide/oxygen as a safe and effective way to treat dental anxiety in children and adults. However, it may not be suitable for children who have severe anxiety, nasal congestion, extensive treatment needs, or discomfort wearing a nasal mask. In these cases, Dr. Koosha and his team can offer alternative sedation methods.
Conscious sedation can help to reduce anxiety or discomfort. As various medications can be safely used in children, we choose the most appropriate option to administer, with your consent, based on their overall health, anxiety level, and dental treatment recommendation. It can then take up to an hour for sedation to take effect. Most children become relaxed or drowsy and may drift into a light sleep from which they can be easily aroused.
When a child suffers from a severe dental condition, we may need to use general anesthesia to help ensure the necessary treatment is safe and comfortable for them. General anesthesia is also an accepted standard of care in situations involving children who have limited comprehension or children who are extremely uncooperative and require dental care that is technically difficult or sensitive.
In addition to keeping your child pain-free during a dental procedure, general anesthesia controls the body’s reaction to stress and relieves the fear and anxiety often associated with surgery. One of the most important roles of an anesthesiologist is to evaluate your child’s health pre-operatively. As a result, we will need you to provide their medical history and complete a physical with their general practitioner or pediatrician before treatment.
We take necessary precautions to protect and monitor your child during general anesthesia, as well as manage any complications.
