Vaughan Kids Dentist: 7 Ways To Ease Kids Dental Anxiety

by | Oct 15, 2021

Getting kids used to the idea of going to the dentist is not something that is usually discussed during formal family meetings or afternoon teas. However, if your kids are starting to show signs of dental-related stress, then it is time to start thinking differently about how you approach getting them into the dentist.

Here are five ways to ease kids at their Vaughan kids’ dentist.

Everyone should be on the same page

If you have more than one child in your household, then it is likely that you will be aware of the challenges that one sibling can have. If you have one child who loves the dentist and another who feels borderline nervous, it will be stressful for everyone.

The best way to avoid this is by making sure that everyone is on the same page. Have your kids do a survey or questionnaire about what they expect from the dentist and what they dislike. This will make it easier on you and them and means that you will know what you need to set up for them.

Prepare them

One of the easiest ways to ease your kids at the dentist is simply to prepare them. If they know what is going to happen and what to expect, they will be a lot calmer about the whole thing.

Talk to your kids about what to expect. Talk about the waiting room, what kind of refreshments they will be offered, how long it will generally take to get an appointment and talk briefly about the dentists.

Give them some visuals

If your kids are visual learners, then there are many things that you can show them that will help them get prepared for the dentist.

You can show them examples of good dental health. Try to go online or to a book library and find images of people with different smiles. Have them try on different sets of teeth. Have them look at pictures of dental tools and toys.

Creating visuals will take away that worry if your kids have trouble remembering things. You can show them pictures of what the dentist will be like. If they have any fears, show them photos of the dentist and the dentist’s office.

They may not be interested in everything you show them but showing interest will help.

Talk to them

One of the best ways to ease your kids at the dentist is to talk to them directly. Talk to your kids about their fears. Talk to your kids about how the dentist feels when examining their teeth. Speak to them about the good things that will happen at the dentist.

Talk to them about the dentist’s tools, what it’s like to have a tooth cleaning, and about having their teeth filled. Talk about how the dentist will talk to them and speak to them about how great their teeth are and how healthy they are.

Take them

If your kids are young, taking them to the dentist is much easier. However, taking them to the dentist can be pretty tricky if they are older.

You can take them to the dentist with you if you are comfortable with them having a seat on your lap. You may also use an app or device such as an iPad or Kindle.

Bring their favourite toys

If they have a favourite toy or toy that comforts them, bring them. The dental office is not always a good place for a toy. However, if they are slightly calmer with their favourite toy, they will feel more comfortable.

Don’t use a restraint

If your child is old enough to sit still, don’t use a restraint. If your child needs to move around, let them. They may need to work on the conversation with the dentist’s feelings and or they may just need to move around.

Visit your kid’s dentist soon

Sometimes, kids need dental treatment and their anxiety might get in the way. You know your child better than anyone else, and you may already know how to convince them to go. If there’s still no luck, call your child’s Vaughan dentist for more tips and suggestions. Your children deserve the best possible dental care they can get!
