Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment)

When the nerve of your tooth becomes infected, a successful root canal treatment lets you keep the tooth, rather than needing to take it out. Keeping your tooth helps prevent your other teeth from drifting out of line and causing jaw problems. Saving a natural tooth avoids having to replace it with an artificial tooth.

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is the process of removing infected, injured or dead pulp from your tooth. We perform most root canal treatments in one appointment in our office. This procedure may be necessary if you have a loose filling, deep cavity, or cracked tooth.

In some cases, bacteria can access the root, lead to infection, destroy the bone, injure the tooth, or destroy nerve tissue. While endodontic therapy is not highly appealing to some patients, the infection can otherwise spread and further damage teeth and gums. There is a high success rate when it comes to root canal treatment.

The root canal procedure includes an examination of your affected tooth, X-rays, and local anesthesia, isolating the tooth with a dental dam, inserting a small hole to remove the pulp, cleaning, shaping, and applying a crown or filling. In rare cases, if the root canal is not successful, we may propose surgery in order to ensure the tooth is repaired and the infection is removed.

Short-term tenderness in the area after treatment is normal. If necessary, you may take over-the-counter, or we can otherwise prescribe a stronger medication for relief. Your dentist might also prescribe an antibiotic to help prevent infection.
